On 23rd September 2008, Prof. Mushirul Hasan [Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia, and an alumnus of the Dept. Of History, AMU] will deliver Nurul Hasan Memorial Lecture on "Reason and Tolerance in South Asian Islam".
Every year, the Centre of Advanced Study (CAS) in History, AMU, organizes this talk in memory of Prof. Nurul Hasan (1921-1993), who not only taught history in AMU but also served as India's Ambassador to USSR , Union Minister of Education, Governor of West Bengal etc. He was the architect in upgrading the AMU's Dept of History to the Centre of Advanced Study, and for the last four decades, it continues to have this unique status [every five years, the UGC makes a performance appraisal to determine whether the status of CAS should continue].
Prof. Nurul Hasan is credited to have trained many of his students as historians of eminence, particularly in Medieval Indian History. He is fondly remembered by his students. Organization of this annual lecture in his memory, is a form of paying glowing tributes to him.
All are requested to attend the lecture for which our Chairman, Prof. B.L. Bhadani, on behalf of the CAS in History, AMU, will be highly grateful. [Time 10 a.m, venue Faculty of Arts Lounge, any change in time and venue will be intimated] Mohammad Sajjad, Lecturer, Centre of Advanced Study in History, AMU, Aligarh
