Remembering the Hotels of AMU Aligarh... Print E-mail
Written by Er. Ahmad Rais Siddiqi (Alig)

Here,I share with all my dear Aligs. the great and special Hotel, restaurants and Dhaabas etc.where most of us some ot the other days had passed out good days.

So, I start here with one Hotel, I,still, very much remember, is "Jai Jawaan Jai Kissan" at Minto Circle's Chhunghi Chhauraha, on Anupshaher road,AMUA. The bread Pakorah of JJJK was very tasty. I recently met the owner of JJJK who is above 94years and still walks daily from his hotel to Ghantaghar, near katpula, and he is still Tana Tanfit.Barhay mian(old fellow) is still very agile and behaves in the simmilar good manners. He also loves the students and students also love him.

So was the KHALA KA HOTEL at Jamia Urdu, on Medical Dodhpur road. She was also very nice to the students and students payed enough respect and love to her. She was beautiful, sober, simple and helping many poor and needy students also.

Once, I got an e mail on this forum from an old boy from Kuwait who had asked the address and contact no of Khala to pay back to her some old dues, as he had very candidly accepted that he was not able to pay the dues of the whole month's lunch, dinner he had eaten at her Khala Ka Hotel.

I went to Aligarh and  found that she was not there and there was no whereabouts of her, so I had replied that old boy that I am sorry that nobody knows her today?

So, the dues of Khala, still remains with that old poor boy of AMU, who has become a very rich, big and renowned Legal Officer in Kingdom of Kuwait.

So was the TEA House, in Shmshad Market, Munawwer Ka Hotel at Tasweer Mahal, Nannay Mian ka, Chhaar Minaar Hotel of Ameer Nishan, Maamun Ka Hotel at Marris Road, near Abdullah Girls School, my classfellow Mottu Pehalwaanji Tillu Ka Hotel in Dodh Pur, infront of Barula Market and of course one and the only and the oldest of the oldest was Cafe de Phoose, near Aftab Hostel or Hockey Ground and one Paradise infront of Sulaiman Hall. But, The best and pleasant was University Canteen where, I used to sit most of the time missing my Engg. classes and doing some cheating for our friends during our Exams of Engg. courses.

Univeristy canteen was owned some time by my clasfellow Nawab Naseem Waris, so he also used to play chess with me there as I was also University Chess champion.

Some time back an air conditioned Resaturant was opened near Tasweer Mahal known as Cipla Resaturant, where,I used to go there daily along with my uncle Prof.Khalid Omar Siddiqi S/O late Prof.Omar Ali Siddiqi (who is a Prof. in USA today), because, it was very costly, so, I could not bear the expenses and my uncle was rich to pay the bills.

One Hotel, Deepak Restaurant, was opened on Tika Ram Mandir chauwraha, where Paratha was the special dish and some girls students of Abdullah Hall also used to come there on Fridays with their parents etc.

One very costly Hotel was opened in Railway Road known as Quality Restaurant. One good hotel was opened at Upper Coat, Jama Masjid, where we used to go to have the LASSI which was very special and juicy. One Hotel also opened near this Lassi wala hotel, famous for Nihaari and we used to go there on our bicycle to take the Nihari, early in the morning after the Namaaz of Fajir, as the nihaari was never available, if we reached there late.

So,this was the whole story of my Hoteling habbits as I always used to enjoy the life of sitting in those hotels and   doing Gup Shup.

One hotel out of Aligarh, where, I still go is the "KHUSRO KA DHABA on G.T.Road, near Sikandrabad, where, late Prof.A.M.Khusro,former VC of AMUA, used to always eat Paratha, Fried Daal with Kheer, while he passed on from there.

But, I went on that Hotel for the very first time when I was very young, with my grand father, late Prof.Omar Ali Siddiqi (first Head of the Dept. of applied Sciences, ZCOE & Technology, AMUA ).

So,to keep the memories of Grand father and Khusro Saheb alive, I still stopover there along with my wife Anjum Naqvi and only cute child, Nadia Ahmad, and I always enjoy there. But the quality has detoriated  and we don't get that taste what we had some fifty years ago.

Now,I am getting excited to remember all those lovely Hotels of Aligarh and Sikandrabad, so I am going to take my lunch now in another Hotel near here called Oberoy Hotel in New Delhi but I am sure I would not enjoy as much as I had enjoyed at JJJK Tea House Tillu Ka hotel Chhaar Minar or Paradise etc.

So,U all Aligs.msut also go to some near by Dhaba or hotel to enjoy and pay remembarance to the lovely Hotels of Aligarh.

Whenever U happened to be in my town pl come to my cottage and I will go to some near by hotel with u also.

Khudahafiz and Fih Amaan Allah.

Hope U all must have also liked this story and respond to me?
Bye bye and have ( A CUP OF TEA IN ANY HOTEL in any city, country or village)
Ur's Duago,

Its wonderful to read and recall old days, I want to add Sufi ke Parath also in this list, It was fun to eat and some time walk away without paying it... :).... Which I feel bad now but at that time it was just fun.

As-salam-ailekum,
Of course Sufi ji ke paranthe can't be forgotten. I still wonder regarding the ingredients of the red chutney that he used to give with the paratha (it was definitely not tomato sauce).I am yet to find another place where we I can find paratha's even nearly good as Sufi ke paranthe. Shukriya siddiqui sahib, purane din yaad dila diye.
