Unanimous resolution passed by the Executive Committee of the (Aligarh Muslim University) AMU Teachers’ Association at its meeting held on June 25, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. in the Staff Club.
This meeting expresses its deep resentment over the conferment of knighthood on Salman Rushdie who was accused of blasphemy for his book ‘The Satanic Verses”. The award of knighthood has tainted the whole knighthood and it is a deliberate attempt to hurt the sentiments of Muslims across the globe. Rushdie is known less for his literary contributions than for his offensive and insulting writings on Islam. The British Government’s decision to confer the award on him showed an utter lack of sensitivity and blatant disregard for the sentiments of Muslims.
The AMU Teachers’ Association strongly condemns the award of the knighthood to Rushdie and appeals to Muslims to exercise restraint over the issue.
It also calls upon the World Community to mobilize public opinion against this award and build up pressure on the British Government to withdraw the award.
