Decline in AMU Culture Print E-mail
Written by Mohammad Allam

Aligarh Muslim University (A.M.U.) culture was feudalistic in nature based on dignity of self respect to all, cooperation with all and sophistication of language. The culture of AMU made a person royal in habit and sat a standard of life.

This was the culture that started after establishment of the university which could be seen in the form of system of bearer mien, self dignity in term of dress, to help the poor and needy, cooperation with the university administration as a elder of the family, and the sweetness of language in the form of URDU.

Certainly AMU culture declining with passage of the time. The democracy, the power of money, multiculturalism and globalization led the shattering of the foundation of AMU culture. The competition led the dishonesty among the guardian of AMU culture and custodian of the university.

Just few example will be enough to cite where the AMU culture heading

1. (Then) More and more SALAM. An average a student salute more than hundred times a day both to known and unknown.(now)less then 10 times a day and only to known.  This SALAM that is basis of AMU culture.

2. (Then) student to shopkeeper-  janab aapka dus rupia zayadah aagaya.(now)shopkeeper to student-aapne dus rupia kam dia hai

3 (Then) Biryani or dhaba wala -Doctor sahib ek plate biryani kha-lijiye, gharib ko khidmat ka mauqa dijiye.(now) biryani wala ya dhabawla-nahi bhai ab nahi de sakta her roz khakar bhag jate hain.

4 (Then) senior to junior-Anwer sahib kya lijiye-ga (now) senior to junior-chal be mere liye ek thnada le aa. These four examples are enough to conclude where this culture reached. But let hope that we will find a new way to revive sprit of our culture. if on individual level we follow our culture then that will revive it on collective level.

A great society is one who never decline in humanity.

"Adab" and "Akhlaq" are the greatest power and mentioned in our beloved QURAN also.

We must teach our youngers to always give respect to all irrespective of status then only you will get respect.

Assalam alaikum to all my beloved seniors.
I agree with Janab Allam Sb words. With a time AMU culture are in decline mode, but the reason why it is so, is the main concern. I remember my time in AMU from 2000-2006, at that time I have seen the starting decline mode from 2003, may be with some respect started as before too.
Actually culture can mainly shave only by its followers, if its followers have forget wht is it? then no solution for this. The culture is mainly secured in individual's hearts. The culture required dedication for it and these dedication is either already present in peoples heart or it is our job to aware people abt it. Now at this moment in AMU new students come for their education only, definitly they work hard, I have seen them but they dont have other interest ie abt our culture. And this is the point which is dangerous for our culture, we cant change those mind who are not interested in AMU culture but we have a solution in the form of "Introduction" or best interaction between seniors and juniors. Why I am more emphasizing to Introduction, is the reason that today in AMU campous this introduction system are also in very much decline mode. As for mine is concern I am from a village background, I had lack of so many manner at that moment before AMU time, I did not know how to talk with people, I only know that "dehati" language, but with introduction I have learned so many think. Today what ever I am, is the blessing of AMU culture and due to my seniors.
Today and every day my pray to ALLAH that please give to the AMU its Glorious past. We want that culture back and remain forever.

Hi Aligs,

I think this change in AMU culture is for good. Its good that AMU is trying to be at par with her counterparts by adopting to the social and cultural changes taking place worldwide. If she has to be a world class institution then I suppose, this flexibility to change as per time's requirement could be very beneficial to the institution. What is required at this moment is that the custodians and guardians of AMU has be watchful to determine its course of direction. Is it heading the right way or not? Lets all be responsible in making it a world class institution by contributing to it in whatever way we can. Together, we can and we will make the difference!

Cheers!

Its impossible for the state of anything to remain stationary wid time, n if it is then some serious reawakening is reqd. Change is alwaz takin place everywhere, for the good and for the bad, simultaneously. the question here is about realizing which ones are imp enough to be considerd n if yes, then in wat way?
The points which have been mentioned by mr. mohd allam are true, but its up to u to decide whethr they are for the good or for the bad.
Wat is unappealing?, the fact tht people have become selfcentred busy with their life?? I would like to know how one expects one to progress in ths fast tracked world, wher life itself is a race,if he/she were to halt at every step to greet every passerby, includin those they dont know from adam?? every one has a very busy life n various issues of their own to be botherd by people who dont play even a minute role in their life. N if other people ARE so very botherd abt the fact that other people dont greet them......... well i have to say...... theyve got a major lack in their life n void in their brain....n its high time they startd thinkin abt gettin their own life on track.
As for the 3rd point statd by mr.mohd allam, is the fact that the dhabawala of amu has aquired a bit of intelligence and business acumen thru the ages so unacceptable for the general amu citizens?? is it so difficult to understand that the poor fellow has a meagre business to run and a family to feed? in fact i think its sad that a doctor used to actually NOT pay the dhabawala. I hope for the sake of amu that THAT is not the case anymore.
i dont mean to imply that amu has succeeded with flying colors wen it comes to the manifestation or retention of its rich cultural heritage. or tht it is better if people dont greet others here. Not greetin people u know n the profs in the univ is undeniably inexcusable... but that is not a part of amus culture or tradition.... it is basic decency of your character. expecting such things from someone under the canopy of amu culture wud amount to demeaning amu's culture. Such etiquettes are a prerequisite for being a marginally ddecent human being.
i would jus like to say that for amu to even start lookin for its lost heritage, we need to look beyond such trivialities and channelise our efforts towards more demanding and more rewarding issues.
