Tasveer Mahal

Ye salary bhi le lo,ye office bhi le lo chahe le lo mujhse wo onsite ka offer,
Magar lauta do mujhko wo tasvir mahal ki yaadein,wo khandelwaal ki lassi,wo neelu ki peeli tadhke wali daal.

Imagine..
Saturday night... Beginning of a month... You received your Demand Draft from your folks... A wonderful movie running at Tasveer Mahal.... A friend's long due "Treat"...

And there you are... At Tasveer Mahal for a Vegetarian Dinner at Neelu's Dhaba and a movie at Tasveer Mahal.

Well, enough for the imagination of AMU Alumni. For others, Tasveer Mahal is an old Cinema Hall in Aligarh. Tasveer Mahal has been very popular among AMU students because of following reasons:

Proximity to AMU campus
Cheapest Ticket
You get to watch those of your favourite old movies which u missed out
Watching movies at Tasveer Mahal had always been fun and having food at Tasveer Mahal had been a luxury at that time. I remember we never bought a Balcony Ticket at Tasveer Mahal coz it was considered foolish to buy a balcony ticket at Tasveer Mahal. Another special trait of Tasveer Mahal was that it was completely a Boys' Cinema theatre. Girls never stepped in without a bet.

I remember that we used to frequently visit the railway station and while coming back, we would quite often stop at Khandelwal's Tea shop, just outside Tasveer Mahal. Apart from good Tea, Khandelwal offered wonderful Gulab Jamuns and hot Samosas. Of course, it wasn't free with the Tea.

Thanks indeed. It Flash Backed to more than three decades when I had watched quite a good numbers of Movies at Tasveer Mahal with my "Cousin Sisters" ( an adage, and proverb we used to say to our provosts and wardens, avoiding the word,Girl Frind.) during my studies. So it will not be right to say that girls did not step in or do not prefer to watch at Tasveer Mahal.

Tasweer mahal would ever remain a long cherished memory for all aligs. i still remember when i was enrolled in 1994. the fist movie i watched was ANARI starred Raj kapoor.well i was quite new in AMU and so fond of watching movies. My mamu Mr. Azam Mir was a very fast friend of Mr. Samir Chawla, the owner of Tasveer Mahal he introduced me to him and showered me with a sheer life time opeprtunity to see FOT(FREE OF TICKET) Movies in TM.Those were really happier days whenever i go back down memory lane, feel tears in my eyes.

well, i came to know about this site from my brother Moin. really im feeling so nostalgic right now. although its almost two years since i have left AMU bt every bit of moments that i had spend in AMU is still fresh in my mind.the hustle bustle of amir nishan, the coffee at centre point, special sunday lunch at Mezbaan, the flock of visitors on sundays to meet their "cousins" in the hostel, saturday night ragging, gossiping with fellow frns till late night in the hostel terrace, the monkey menace in my hostel(I.G.)...................................................i think it will go on and on.i had passed some brilliant years of mu life there. I MISS YOU AMU.

Tasveer Mahal was the "Broadway" of Aligarh. My earliest memories are from early 60's, when Mughal-e-Azam was released. I was a little kid. Marhoom Mufti Rasheeduddin Saheb (Srinagar, Kashmir) was visiting Aligarh and stayed at our house. He took us all the kids to the movies. He even offered prayers outside the door!

The biggest hit of those times "Bobby" was first screened in TM. Of course, the ticket line had blocked the main road. The tickets were sold for Rs. 25, at a time when tickets used to go for two or three rupees.

On Sundays at around 10 AM, english movies used to run at Tasveer Mahal. My dear friend, Marhoom Afzal and myself were movie addicts. We would usually go on one bicycle, which would be parked in the bicycle stand, and we would have money left for a cup of tea and a samosa. Interestingly enough, the timing of English movies coincided with the ijtema at the University Mosque. Sometimes, Abba Jan would ask where were we going. You guessed the answer right...to the Ijtema...without specifying which ijtema!

I remember that the ticket in Tasveer Mahal used to cost Rs. 5.25/- in 1992!!! Houseful ka to koi chakkar hi nahin tha.. aaram se seat mil jaati thi. Poore hall mein sirf ek 200 watt ka bulb tha!! Makdi ke jaale to itne the li poocho mat. Lakdi ki seats with no cushions!!!

My dad tells me that when Mughal-e-Azam was released in the early 60's, Tasveer Mahal mein ticket Rs. 100 ki mil rahi thi, black mein!!!!
