Dr. M. Athar Ansari presented a paper entitled “Bacteriological Quality of Drinking Water in Aligarh”. Dr. Ansari Reader in Department of Community Medicine, JN Medical College was attending 51st Annual Conference of Indian Public Health Association held at Science City, Kolkata. The 250 samples collected by him are from different sources and nearly all were found to be highly contaminated.
The water supplied by Nagar Nigam was found to be contaminated to 78.99% while from shallow hand pumps were found to contain 64.08%. The paper concluded that water from these sources are not fit for drinking purpose. This needs a periodical bacteriological analysis of water samples from all sources to avoid potential hazards of water born diseases.
