AMU : ongoing Dharna at the Jantar Mantar Print E-mail
Written by AMU Correspodent

The ongoing Dharna at the Jantar Mantar by 30 students has got support from the intellectual circle of New Delhi in the recent times and now getting intensified. This struggle by the peaceful agitators has become the fight for their existence now after Vice-Chancellor using the draconian laws of AMU Students Conduct and Discipline Act, 1985 which are contravention to the article 19 of the Indian Constitution has suspended and imposed campus ban on 29 students. Now the students who offered space for dialogue to the AMU administration are very much ready to mobilize the entire students' community of India and convince the intellectual community to throw light in the sad state of affairs at AMU.

The AMU Students Struggle Committee is pleased to inform that the Ramon Magsaysay award winner of 2002 social activist Sandeep Pandey has offered all solidarity with the students sitting on Dharna and assured his National Alliance of People Movement( NAPM) shall further the cause of the AMU students. Faisal Khan of NAPM and K.K.Kaliya of the NGO Dadi-Ma has also assured the agitating students that they will try to convince other social activist around the country to stand up for the cause of the students. Famous social activist Medha Patekar as member of the NAPM is also noted to be concerned about the crushing of democratic movement of the AMU students by its Vice-Chancellor.

The JNUSU office bearers and other Executive Member of it shall hold a Press Conference at the site of Dharna at 3.00 pm today condemning the dictatorial closure of the AMU, the action on the peaceful agitators of AMU and the lack of democratic space at the AMU campus.
JNUSU as a respected and responsible student body in India has earlier offered full support to the cause of the AMU students and already held a public meeting on this issue at JNU premises.
AMU Students Struggle Committee and JNUSU together are planning to hold a one day Dharna at the AMU campus by the famous media persons and social activist of the country in a week or so. The preparation is going on in full swing.

AMU Students Struggle Committee is extremely grateful to Janab Hasan Kamal sb, Old Boy, U.S.A to offer a visit at the Dharna site yesterday from his precious time and giving the opportunity to the students to voice their genuine grievances. He was accompanied by Janab Irfan Ahmad Sb. , Ex- General Secretary, Old Boys Association, Lucknow who patiently listened to the problems of the students and emphasized that university must reopen immediately and AMU administration should look into the root causes of students unrest instead of suspending them closing all spaces of dialogues.

We hope that our Old Boys would be very much proactive about the concerns and demands of AMU Students Struggle Committee without further delay and won't let us left at the hand of the other student bodies of India and social activists to solve the student issues of our Alma mater.
