A condolence meeting presided over by the AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis expressed its deep sense of grief and sorrow on the sad demise of noted Hindi critic and scholar, Prof. K. P. Singh, former Chairman, Department of Hindi and former Dean, Faculty of Arts, who expired on 8th November 2009 after a prolonged illness. He was 74. Addressing the condolence meeting Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis said that Prof. K. P. Singh created a history and set an example for others by donating his body for the noble purpose of medical studies and higher learning in this field and thus helping the humanity in his own characteristic unassuming way. On this occasion noted Urdu writer Padma Bhushan Prof. Qazi Abdus Sattar former Dean Faculty of Arts, Prof. S. J. R. Zaidi, Director Persian Institute Prof. Azarmi Dukht Safavi and Prof. Pradeep Kumar Saxena highlighted the contributions of Prof. K. P. Singh. Born on 6th June 1937 in a farmer family in Karola Village, Aligarh district, Prof. Singh obtained the degree of BA in 1959, MA in 1961 and PhD in 1969 from AMU. He joined the University services as Lecturer in 1966, became Reader in 1977 and Professor in 1985. For him teaching was not merely a means of compulsive routine but an important tool of building character and transforming students into a worthwhile instrument to the accelerate the course of change in the society for the benefit of the country. Professor Singh was a good researcher and prolific writer. He has made invaluable contribution to the enrichment of academic life. He had authored six books and edited nine books. He was also Editor and Co-editor of several Hindi magazines and produced 15 research scholars. He has edited six books of Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza and his monograph on Dr. Raza was published by the National Academy of Letters. Dr. K. P. Sing was elected as a member of all the AMU statutory bodies like Academic Council, Executive Council and the University Court. He served the University as a Chairman, Department of Hindi, Dean Faculty of Arts, Provost NRSC, Coordinator NSS, Chief of University Employment Bureau, Member Incharge Public Relations and Coordinator University Extension Lecture. He was member of several Selection Committees of the Public Service Commission and other Universities. Prof. Singh played an important role in promoting communal harmony. He considered illiteracy and communalism as a national threat and dedicated his life for the eradication of the scourge. He was an advocate of composite culture and organized several symposium and workshops to promote Urdu language and literature as well. The great ideals and traditional values of Aligarh Muslim University lived in his persona and he remained to be an epitome of the Aligarianism that an Aligarian is known for the world over. Prof. Singh is survived by his wife Dr. Namita Singh, former Principal, Tikaram Girls College, son Sourabh Singh, a Bio-scientist in USA and daughter Sumita Singh, both alumni of this great seat of learning. AMU Registrar Prof. V. K. Abdul Jaleel presented a condolence resolution and said that the meeting of staff and students of Aligarh Muslim University mourned the sad demise of Prof. Singh and placed on record heartfelt condolences. The meeting expressed deep sympathy to his bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace and give courage to the family members to bear the irreparable loss and vacuum created by his untimely departure.
