Unanimous resolution passed by the Executive Committee of Aligarh Muslim University Teachers’ Association (AMUTA) in its meeting held on October 31, 2009

This meeting of the Executive Committee of AMU Teachers’ Association, in its meeting held on 31.10.2009 at 11:30 A.M. expresses its strong resentment, condemnation shock and dismay over the closure of the University by the Vice-Chancellor. It is unfortunate that by unwanted closure of the University the career of thousands of students has been ruined. We feel that there was no need to close the University, at this juncture as the students were sitting on peaceful dharna and it was possible to settle the matter through negotiation. The classes were going on peacefully which is also evident by the statement of University P.R.O. one day before the closure of the University. Vice-Chancellor and his administration has completely failed to tackle the situation and resorted to closure of the University.

The Executive Committee in its earlier resolution has already expressed its view that a Vice-Chancellor who is facing enquiry against financial irregularities and has lost moral authority cannot run the University and the amount spent on security has not served any purpose.

The main reason for the trouble in University is a communication gap between students, teachers and the Vice-Chancellor. There is no representative body of the students as no elections to the Students’ Union are held for last 3 years. The Vice-Chancellor has also no communication with representative of AMU teachers and is actively involved in the politics of teachers.

We, therefore, demand that a thorough enquiry into whole affairs of the University during the tenure of the present Vice-Chancellor be held by a Supreme Court Judge to find out the root cause of such disturbances.

The Executive Committee strongly demands that the decision of closure of the University must be withdrawn immediately and also reiterates its demand that a compensation of Rs.20 lacs be paid to the bereaved family of Late Shahnawaz Alam by the government.
