A three day National Seminar was organized by the Center for Women’s Studies, Aligarh Muslim University on “Women in Modern Social and Political Thought”. The seminar was attended by a galaxy of eminent scholars including Prof. Irfan Habib, Prof. Aditya Mukherjee, Delhi, Prof. Mridula Mukherjee, Delhi and Prof. Meera Koshambi. The special lecture was delivered by Prof. Mridula Mukherjee and Prof. Meera Koshambi. Delivering the welcome address, Professor Shireen Moosvi, Director, Centre of Women’s Studies briefly outlined the progress of the Centre and happily informed that the Center has been promoted from Phase I Development Plan directly to Phase III by the University Grants Commission. Prof. Farhat Hasan, Coordinator of the Center highlighted the relevance and importance of the topic of the Seminar. Prof. Mridula Mukherjee enlightened the audience with her intellectual narration of ideologies based on gender equality that have been prevalent in Indian philosophical history right during the freedom struggle. Prof. Mukherji also shed light especially on the thought of Nehru and Gandhiji. She discussed women’s involvement in national movement pointing out that nationalist vision cannot be discussed completely without mentioning women’s contribution. Prof. Irfan Habib while presiding over the inaugural session of the seminar said that in a class ridden society like ours, women are oppressed at every level as the gender discrimination is still in practice in our society. Prof. Habib suggested that any legislation in this regard should be prescriptive rather than compulsory in nature. Prof. C. P. S. Chauhan, Dean, Faculty of Social Science appreciated the activities of the Centre and praised for taking up the issue of gender equality as the core of the social issues.
