A condolence meeting to mourn the sad demise of Padmashri Professor P.N. Kaula, Doyen of Library and Information Science was organized at the Department of Library and Information Science at Maulana Azad Library, Amu Aligarh. Prof. Kaula an eminent scholar and great teacher of Library and Information Science has expired recently at the age of 85. Prof. Shabahat Husain, Librarian-in-Charge, Maulana Azad Library, spoke about the contributions of Prof. P.N. Kaula. He said that Prof. Kaula was ‘one of the most influential librarians in the world’. He was one of the world renowned personalities in the field of library and information science. There are few people who have left their footprints as deep as Prof. Kaula in the library and information science discipline. Prof. Shabahat said that it was a great loss to this profession. His sad demise has created a vacuum which cannot be filled in near future. Prof. Kaula’s contribution in the development of library and information system in and outside India is well known and highly appreciated. Mr. Shakeel Ahmed, Deputy Librarian informed that the Government of India honoured Prof. kaula with prestigious Padmashri Award in the year 2004 for his sincere and whole hearted contributions in developing library and information system in India. Dr. Naushad Ali P.M., Chairman, Department of Library and Information Science said in his speech that Prof. Kaula was closely associated with the Department in various capacities since its inception. He sincerely contributed rupees one lakh for establishing Kaula-Bashirudhin Chair in the Library and Information Science in 1996. He also instituted Prof. M. Bashirudhin-Kaula Gold Medal at the Department to the best student of BLISc every year since 1996. The efforts are on for instituting Prof. P.N. Kaula Lecture Series in the Department under Prof. P.N. Kaula Endowment Trust. Dr. Naushad Ali read the condolence message and informed that it will be sent to the family members of Prof. P.N. Kaula to express seep sense of sorrow and solidarity to the aggrieved family. Faculty members, Staff and Students of the Department of Library and Information Science and all library professionals of Maulana Azad Library, AMU Aligarh were present in the Condolence Meeting.
