Oscar-winner music maestro Padma Shri Dr. Allah Rakha Rahman and Noted Urdu writer Gopi Chand Narang conferred Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa), here in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) at its 59th convocation.Allah Rakha Rahman started his speech from these words… Jahan Waale is Dar Se Kamyab Ho Kar Nikalte Hain, Yeh Who Dar Hai Jahan Se IIam Ke Chashmein Ubalte Hain! In his speech, A. R. Rahman urged young people to participate in building a strong, harmonious India and world. Youths should have a fresh vision for their future. Rahman Further said that “With the Aligarh Muslim University I share a vision that embraces diversity and acknowledge the benefits that each person can bring to the progressive development of our world." Rahman ended his speech with “Jai Ho”, the song for which he got Oscar. Prof. Dr. Gopi Chand Narang, an Indian scholar of Urdu language and literature, an eminent Urdu writer, scholar, critic and linguist who also received AMU’ Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) expressed his views about Urdu’s status among Indian languages. Prof. Dr. Gopi Chand Narang said Urdu is complete language and has highest status among all the Indian languages. “To me Urdu is not only language but is a way of life of thinking and a way of living more than a thousand years of composite culture drawing sustenance from Amir Khusrau, Nanak, Nizammuddin and the hand-outs of Ghalib, Mir, Iqbal, Faiz, Firaq, Prem Chand and Qurratul Ain Haider” he added. West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who was the Chief Guest at this convocation, said Aligarh Muslim Univarsity should work for bridging the gap between the people of India and Pakistan.The Aligarh Muslim University can help the people of India and Pakistan by drawing clear lines between the perpetrators of hatred and violence representing the Taliban on one hand and the masses of India and Pakistan on the other hand. Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi further said that the university should strive to play an important role in empowering the deprived sections of the society including women. In his address, Prof P K Abdul Azis, Vice Chancellor Aligarh Muslim University said that a national legislation should be enacted to define the meaning of terms like minority and minority status. The AMU awarded PhD degrees to 291 students, while 1,490 students received their master degrees and 251 students got bachelor degrees during the convocation function.AMU also presented 43 gold medals and 160 university medals.
